Logging into Shared Computers & Devices with Passkey

Audience: Faculty, Staff, Students

The following instructions demonstrate how to log in to shared computers across the University of Arkansas campus. The instructions will differ depending on whether you are authenticating with a passkey on your mobile device using the Microsoft Authenticator App, or a YubiKey. Instructions for both passkey and YubiKey are included in this article. 

Before you Start

• Shared computers are used by multiple people rather than being assigned to a single individual.
• Common examples of shared computers on campus are classroom computer workstations, conference rooms, and computer labs. 
• Windows Hello is not enabled on shared computers across campus, so signing in to them will look different than signing onto your personal device for school or work. 

Steps for Passkey (Using a Mobile Device)

1. Select Sign in.
   
   
    

2. Enter your UARK email address.
   
   
    

   IMPORTANT: After entering your UARK email, you may be asked for your password. You can enter it, but you will also have to authenticate with your passkey or YubiKey afterward. To skip entering your password, select "Use your face, fingerprint, or security key instead" and continue with the steps in this guide.

    

3. Under Choose a passkey, select iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
   Note: Your choices could include other options than shown here. 
   
   


4. A QR code will appear on the screen. Use your device's camera to scan it.
5. On your phone or tablet, select Use passkey, which will prompt you to authenticate with your passkey. This will be the facial recognition, touch ID, or PIN you set up when creating the passkey.
   
   
    
6. Once you authenticate on your mobile device, you are done signing in.

Steps for YubiKey

1. Select Sign In.
   
   


2. Enter your UARK email address.
   
   


3. Under Choose a passkey, select Security key.
   
   
    
4. Insert your security key into the USB port.
   
   
    
5. Enter your security key PIN.
   
   


6. Touch the security key.
   
   


7. Once accepted, remove the YubiKey and return it to it’s safe place. Do not leave your YubiKey behind. You are done signing in to the shared computer.
    

What's Next

Once you sign in to the computer using passkey on your mobile device or a YubiKey, you will be asked to authenticate into university resources with these same steps. Remember to sign out of your account when you are done using the shared computer or device.
