Body

Audience: Students, Faculty, Staff

Responsible Group: IT Training and Outreach

Overview

Avoid notification overload by customizing notifications so you stay informed about mentions, replies, announcements, and community updates at your preference. Tailor notifications and frequency (real-time vs. digest) to match your workflow and reduce distractions.

Key Features

  • In-app & desktop push: Real-time alerts in the Viva Engage web/desktop experience.
  • Email: Choose which activities generate emails (mentions, replies, announcements, daily/weekly digests).
  • Teams activity feed: See Viva Engage and Answers in Viva updates directly in Teams.
  • Per-community control: Decide which communities can send notifications and how often.
  • Granular settings: Adjust by notification type, channel, and (if applicable) per Engage network.
Tip: Review your settings at the start of each term or when you join/leave communities to keep noise low and signal high.

Where to change notifications

Microsoft's webpage, Manage your Viva Engage notifications, has directions for changing notification settings for:

  • Pop-up notifications (desktop and web app)
  • Email
  • Mobile (push notifications) for Android and iOS.

Note: If you aren’t receiving notifications, confirm Engage notifications are enabled within app settings and allowed in your browser/OS notification permissions.
