Installing and Using Read&Write (Accessibility Software)

Read&Write is text-to-speech software for users with literacy needs, available for download to all students, faculty and staff.

Install Read&Write for Windows

Chrome is the recommended browser for installing Read&Write. 

  1. Click the installer download link.
  2. Click the Download button. Open the downloaded ZIP file.
    Note: If you have third-party ZIP software, you might be required to right-click to unzip the file.
  3. Double-click Setup.msi. Follow the prompts to install.
    Note: Firefox requires a plug-in for using Read&Write. Follow the prompts in your browser to continue. 
  4. Select Sign in with Microsoft. Log in with your UARK email address and password.
  5. Click Open or Accept when asked if you are sure you want to allow the app. 
  6. Open the Read&Write application from the Start Menu. The toolbar will appear on your screen and will float on top of other applications. Click the arrow on the right to display all tools.

If you receive an error that your email address could not be verified, contact the IT Help Desk.

Additional Language Packs for Windows

Additional language packs are available to allow Read&Write to read other languages in addition to the English default.

  1. Go to our Language Pack for Windows download site.
  2. Click the Download button to download a ZIP file containing all Language Packs, or click on a Language Pack, and then click the Download button to install only that Language Pack.
  3. Open the file, and follow the prompts.
  4. Select the new Language Pack in Read&Write by clicking the Settings button on the right end of the toolbar. Click Show more settings.
  5. In the Speech category, click the Voice drop-down to select a Language Pack.

Install Read&Write for Mac

  1. Click the installer download link.
  2. Click the Download button. 
  3. Open the ReadWrite-mac.dmg file, and drag the Read&Write app to the Applications folder.
  4. Open the Read&Write app from the Applications folder, and click Open when asked if you want to open it.
  5. If asked to sign in, select Sign in with Microsoft, and log in with your @uark.edu email address and password. Click Accept.
    When installation is complete, the Read&Write toolbar and icon will appear on your screen, and the toolbar will float on top of other applications.

Additional Language Packs for Mac

Additional language packs are available to allow Read&Write to read other languages.

  1. Go to our Language Pack for Mac download site.
  2. Click the Download button to download voices.dmg.
  3. Double-click voices.pkg, and follow the prompts.
  4. To select a new language in Read&Write, go to Settings, Speech, Edit Voice Settings. Your Mac System Preferences will open to the Accessibility speech tab.
  5. Select Customize from the System Voice drop-down to view all voice/language options.
  6. Select a language, and click OK. It could take a minute or two to download the language. This language will now be available in the System Voice drop-down.

Install Read&Write for iPad

  1. Download and install the free iPad app.
  2. If an activation/registratrion code is required, tap here for the link.
    You must be logged into the UARK Help Portal to view the link.
  3. Complete the installation.
