Creating a Duplicate Exam to Enable Location Restriction

Summary

These instructions outline one method for creating a duplicate exam to enable the location restriction instead of a password, as required when utilizing Testing Services for proctoring Blackboard exams.

Body

Passwords are not used for Blackboard exams taken at a Testing Services location. This document outlines one method to create a copy of an exam so you can enable the location restriction instead of using a password.

Summary

 Copy the Exam

If only a portion of your students will be testing at Testing Services, you will need to create a copy of the original exam so you can implement the location restriction.

  1. Click the three-dots menu [ ... ]  at the top right of the course content page.
  2. Select Copy Items from the menu.
  3. Navigate through the Copy Items pages and click the checkbox next to the exam.
  4. Click the Start Copy button.
  • The new exam will appear in the course content section.
  • It's good practice to add "@ Testing Services" to the end of the copied exam title.

Add Exemptions for the Original Exam

Next, you will need to exempt the students testing at a Testing Services location from the original exam in the gradebook.

  1. Go to Course in BB > Gradebook > Select the Grades tab.
  2. Click the in the original exam column next to the student you want to test with Testing Services.
  3. Click Ø add or edit exemptions.
  4. Click the check box to Exempt grade.
  5. Click Save.

Update Release Conditions of the new exam

Now, update the release conditions in the copied exam so that it is only viewable to student(s) taking their exam with Testing Services.

  1. Go to the course in BB
  2. Under the new test you created in Step 1, click the "Hidden from Students" drop-down and select Release Conditions.
  3. Select "Specific members or groups" and add any students testing at a Testing Services location in the Individual members box.
  4. Remember to open at 8:00 AM to allow for students with accommodations who must schedule outside of the regular class time due to extended time or other factors.
  5. Click Save at the bottom right.

 Add Location Restriction

Next, ensure that a password and Respondus Monitor are not used, and then set the location restriction.

  1. Go to the new exam you created in step 1 and select the gear icon next to Assessment Setting on the right.
  2. Scroll down to Assessment security and ensure that there is no access code
  3. Under Location restriction, select UA Testing Services.
  4. Click Save.

 Gradebook Settings

  • BBHelp also recommended double-checking that the overall Grade Settings are set to calculate grades based on points earned out of total graded points. This is the default setting in Blackboard.
